Opening March 21!
 Fugue States
(new work by Annaly Bennett / John David O’Brien)
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 21, 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Exhibition Dates: March 21- April 11, 2015

Artists’ Statement
:
The exhibition Fugue States explores through painting, drawing, sculpture
and installation trajectories in Pasadena traced by these artists through a
series of personal projections, historic recollections and poetic reveries.
Fashioning uncertain maps of personal terrains, that are laced with frequent
mis-transcriptions due to engaging processes of abstraction, ellipsis,
metonymy and abandon, the two create new pathways to understanding
the traversed and constructed landscape.

Opening May 2!
SUSAN FELDMAN: Structures & Strings

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 2, 6:00-9:00 pm

Exhibition Dates: May 2-30, 2015

Susan Feldman’s exhibition at Groundspace Project involves installation,
sculptures, and wall works that engage sculpture, weaving, and drawing.
The central installation space is established by several human-scaled
structures composed of found wood. They stand, like silent sentinels,
between a gridded wall of drawings and an entryway sheltered by a string
canopy. Equally evocative of natural and human-made realms, Feldman’s
oeuvre recalls French theorist Claude Levi-Strauss’s discussion of the artist
as bricoleur, as one who constructs or builds from the (often discarded)
materials at hand.  (Betty Brown)

Groundspace Project is pleased to present, New Work by Lillian Abel and Robin Parsons.  Ms. Abel will be exhibiting new paintings and ceramic sculpture and Ms. Parsons new paintings.  Dissimilar in subject matter but having the same density of surface and intensity of color, both artists produce deeply rich and personal meditations.

Lillian Abel:

My art is about exploring the balance between abstraction and representation. The paintings are abstracted by the palette knife, searching for hidden worlds and images in the paint that reveal on the picture plane. They need to be uncovered, stroked, massaged and moved onto the surface, brought up from where they are hiding; surprising me with their ability to come forth when called by my hand. Revealing the recognized of our ‘world sight’ as unrecognizable, opening the eye of the witness to the intimate and the remote. Beginning from the darkness, moving to find hidden worlds that lay just beyond the edge of our awareness, bringing forth the unexplored knowledge of the unseen. When the scales of our eyes are lifted we are brought to the underlying entity.

Robin Parsons:

In January of 2010 I moved to the beautiful Ojai Valley and began work on the panels exhibited here. These panels began as a personal exploration of virtues and sins in an attempt to better understand and learn from identifying them. Painted on heavy wooden panels, the acrylic paint was sprayed, splattered and brushed on and sanded away to create the images represented here.
