Fugue States (new work by Annaly Bennett / John David O’Brien)

The exhibition Fugue States explores through painting, drawing, sculpture and installation trajectories in Pasadena traced by these artists through a series of personal projections, historic recollections and poetic reveries. Fashioning uncertain maps of personal terrains, that are laced with frequent mis-transcriptions due to engaging processes of abstraction, ellipsis, metonymy and abandon, the two create new pathways to understanding the traversed and constructed landscape.
Artists’ Statement:
Fugues states are a disturbed state of consciousness in which the one affected seems to perform acts in full awareness but upon recovery cannot recollect them or remember who they were. People in this state can suddenly and unexpectedly take leave of their usual physical surroundings and embark on a journey that can last as little as a few hours or as long as several months. During the fugue state, individuals completely lose their identity, later assuming a new one. They don’t know their real names or anything about their former lives, and they do not recognize friends or family. They may not even remember how they got to where they are. While loss of memory can occur for many reasons, dissociative fugue has no direct physical or medical cause. Rather, it may have been precipitated by severe stress or an emotionally traumatic event that is so powerful the mind seems to shut down and temporarily erase everything.
