Groundspace Project is pleased to present “Making a home where they lay their heads.”, a solo painting exhibition by Stephen Parise. Through the use of soft, direct brushwork, subtle color and and dreamy abstract compositions, Mr. Parise creates in his paintings liminal spaces evocative of the Tantric tradition.
Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, April 26, 6:00 to 9:00 pm to celebrate this accomplished body of work!
Artist’s Statement:
My work is playful and curious about materials, subjects and painting itself. There are great differences between the paintings, but I feel there are a lot of similarities too. When selecting work for this show, it was important to use the differences to create a kind of rhythm. Some of the paintings I would describe as quiet while others a bit noisy perhaps.
For me, it is important that a painting resonates further than its subject or materials. I think that is the best way I can describe it. It is a feeling that I often find through the process, seeing what works (and what doesn’t), thinking about why, and keeping the work engaging for the viewer. I want the work to have some kind of timeless quality about it – in that it isn’t about a particular moment or a particular place.

Groundspace Project is pleased to present Riversystem, a photographic essay by Fred Hoerr. Ranging from vast vistas of the L.A. River aqueduct and bridges to its trickle of water and life, these photographic prints are full of downtown’s particular light and rich color.
Please join us for the opening reception of Fred Hoerr: “Riversystem”, Saturday, March 22, 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
Artist’s Statement:
Riversystem is an ongoing project and combines landscapes, portraits and detail from a segment of the Los Angeles River, along with people living in and around its structures and the bordering Union Pacific rail lines. Having lived nearby for years, it has served as my backyard and wilderness. Initially inspired by its raw beauty, recently I’ve begun photographing the residents I’ve come to know. Most have lived here for years and have created encampments that are for now their homes. With this work, I’ve attempted to describe a view of the unrefined beauty in this environment and its natural reflection in the people who live in it.
