ALAN NAKAGAWA: MUDSLING

A new sound installation by Alan Nakagawa will premiere at Groundspace Project. The opening is Saturday April 9, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Mudsling is an emotional response inspired by a six week artist residency in 2015 at the MacDowell Art Colony in Peterboro, New Hampshire. It was Nakagawa’s first group artist residency, first experience in New England, and first experience living in a forest. Compared to his drought stricken home of Los Angeles, this green, lush environment literally ignited a series of artistic breakthroughs for the artist. The sound loop is based on a thunderstorm that passed over the art colony one afternoon. Filled with additional field recordings, subtle frequencies, some folly work and the sound of a marble game by MacDowell staff Blake Tewksbury, Mudsling is a enveloping sound sculpture of nature. While the Presidency campaigns were active in the region, nature constantly reminds us who is still in charge.

In-between Sun and Moon: Takeshi Kanemura and Snezana Saraswati Petrovic

Please join us Saturday, February 27, 6:00 to 9:00 pm for the opening reception of In-between Sun and Moon a collaborative performance based installation by Takeshi Kanemura and Snezana Saraswati Petrovic.

Artists’ Statement:

The poetic juxtaposition of Sun versus Moon with the humanity in -between, is explored with the use of organic vs man made materials and monochromatic vs polychromatic color choices.

Each week there will be alteration and addition to both of the spaces, as the Moon is changing with each new performance the space will alive and altered.

With this installation and performance series will be a fluid, living entity and a playground for the artistic dialogue between Snezana Saraswati petrovic and Takeshi Kanemura. Each moon phase performance will bring new artists into the dialogue until the final performance with 3 guests’ artists from Tokyo: Satomi Akutsu, Hiroshi Simizu, and Ranwakawa.

This exhibition has two distinct spaces/installations both relating to the memories: Past Lives Garden and Invented landscape

“Past lives garden” is space with real and fabricated memories of our past as a reflection on our place in the universe. The installation in this space is monochromatic, and poetic reflection on the nature and opposing forces between the Sun and Moon as symbolic embodiment of yin vs. yang.

“Invented landscape” is hypothetic future environment created with plastic and all man made materials in vibrant and fluorescent colors, seemingly upbeat and childish. Walking through a door/ gate from the garden to the invented landscape a viewer will be transported from past into a possible future with no natural recourses where the plastic and genetically modified food will dominate.

“In-between Sun and Moon” is a collaborative installation/performance art project that explores the in- between spaces of otherness, gender and displacement. With this exhibition Takeshi Kanemura and Snezana Saraswati Petrovic are continuing the artistic dialogue reflecting on the polarities of private vs public space.

Groundspace Project is pleased to present Recondite Substance, a group exhibition of  Los Angeles based artists, Nena Amsler, Jonna Lee, Caryl St. Ama and William Solomon; artists whose works delve into rich interplay between organic abstraction and concrete materiality.

Artists’ Statements:

Nena Amsler:

In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh “reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” My work looks like it’s made out of dirt and thread, but it’s really all made entirely out of acrylic paint.

This ambiguity suffuses my work in other ways as well. Holes and tears in the dirt point to the space behind the painting, the “underworld” or the subconscious.

Jonna Lee:

My interests revolve around several topics; the viewers’ assumptions about specific materials, the anthropomorphically charged potential of sculpture, and the visceral impact present when any given artwork seduces the human senses.

Currently I wed traditional sculptural processes with a material that fascinates me for these properties – platinum silicon rubber.  This material potentialities concrete sensory qualities in abstract form.

Caryl St. Ama:

This current body of work focuses on the effects of both natural and man-made disasters effecting the Gulf coast. The work I make today is a constant reminder of what a delicate balance the cycle of life is.  I make work using encaustic, pigmented beeswax, layered with a variety of collage materials, detritus and oil paint.

I love the way the wax encapsulates the feathers, leaves or lace and creates a natural depth that one can look into and through.  I love the reflective nature of the wax.  I use wooden panels and combine them in different ways to create a dialog or a narrative the way one would weave a tale to warn those of things to come or how things once were.

William Solomon:

My work stems from my life narrative from early childhood and includes my thoughts and demons from that life experience.

In this series I have used various inanimate materials and used them to portray sentient groupings. I have combined  cast resin, clay, metal, wood, plastic, oil, and acrylic in order to produce this effect. I hope that it comments on the universality of the human condition.
